Family of Sarah Rowland
My Maternal Great-Great-Grandparents
Introductory note
Using the information from my great-grandfather Samuel Rowland’s birth certificate and his baptism record, I have
been able to establish that he was illegitimate - his mother Sarah was named on both records but no father was
named. In 1881, however, Samuel took his stepfather Searson Norris’ name on the census and also named Searson
as his father when he married. Although I have no reason to firmly believe that Searson was Samuel’s biological
father, because Sarah Rowland is my direct ancestor and she had two children with Searson, I have included the
Norris connections for the purpose of completeness.
